Notes: Monsanto was founded by John Queeny with an overdraught in St. Louis, manufacturing Saccharin. It braved fierce German competition and lacked any obvious competitive advantage. The company attracted little excitment with its IPO in the roarinf twenties. The business expanded, at times agressively, taking on significant debt as it moved into a range of organic chemicals and raised its technical abilities. Later spread its interest into fibres and non-chemicals but is best known for its involvement in agriculture-related products.

Keys: Monsanto, Petrochemicals, Agrichemicals, St Louis Missouri
