Notes: Founded as the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China in 1853. The IPO prospectus confidently proclaimed "... by studiously avoiding the errors which have too often been committed by a departure from strict banking business and bearing in mind the very high rate of interest which prevails in the East, and the very lucrative nature of the Exchange business ... a very large Annual Dividend may be looked for with certainty". Since then the bank has had its share of difficulties, but has thrived again on its core Asian operations.
